Palantir Owns Deployment
The startling number in Palantir's quarter was not 93% revenue growth. It was the combination of that growth with a 47% operating margin under ordinary accounting.
The company reported second-quarter revenue of $1.935 billion, up 93% from a year earlier. U.S. commercial revenue rose 149% to $764 million, U.S. government revenue rose 90% to $809 million, and Palantir closed 220 deals worth at least $1 million. GAAP operating income reached $912 million; adjusted operating margin was 62%, and cash from operations was $1.216 billion.
Bloomberg and every earnings desk covered the beat. What they missed is what those margins say about where enterprise AI value is concentrating. Palantir is not mainly charging for model access. It sells the operational layer, the software equivalent of wiring a new engine into every gauge, permission and control in a factory. Models can change underneath; Palantir keeps the map of the customer's data, rules and decisions. That “last mile” is hard to standardize, but once installed it is also hard to remove.
Why it matters: The quarter is evidence that implementation can become a scalable product rather than a permanent consulting project. Revenue grew far faster than sales and marketing expense, which rose 39% to $340 million, while 47% of each revenue dollar became operating profit. That weakens the popular thesis that enterprise AI will enrich model vendors first and systems integrators second. A company that makes models interchangeable while making its own workflow and permission layer indispensable can capture the economic rent instead. Britain Localizes the Backdoor
The UK did not abandon its fight with Apple over encrypted iCloud data. It narrowed the target from the world to Britain and tried again.
Apple filed a new complaint at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal in July over a second Technical Capability Notice, a secret order that can require a service to preserve the ability to provide government access. The new challenge concerns UK users, after Washington pushed London to drop an earlier global demand. Apple had already withdrawn Advanced Data Protection, which keeps even Apple from reading encrypted backups, from the UK market.
This is not a warrant for one person's files. Under section 253 of the Investigatory Powers Act, the government can order a provider to maintain a technical capability and gag the recipient. Privacy International's case summary shows the institutional asymmetry: the public knows a dispute exists, but Apple cannot freely describe the order and the full tribunal reasoning may remain visible only to Apple and the Home Office.
Why it matters: Britain's retreat was geographic, not conceptual. The first order tested whether one government could alter encryption globally; the second tests whether it can make strong encryption unavailable inside its own market. That converts a cryptographic argument into a distribution rule. If the notice survives, large platforms can preserve security elsewhere by shipping weaker national variants, while smaller encrypted services face a harsher choice between redesign and exit. The structural outcome is a fragmented security market in which citizenship and location determine whether the provider is technically capable of reading a backup.
Room for disagreement: A UK-only notice is less extraterritorial than the original reported demand, and law-enforcement agencies have legitimate investigations involving terrorism and child abuse. The government can argue that a national service variant respects democratic sovereignty. But local scope does not solve the security question: a deliberately retained access path remains a target for hostile states and criminals, and secrecy makes proportionality difficult to test.
What to watch: Whether the tribunal publishes the assumed facts and draws a legal distinction between compelling Apple to preserve access and accepting Apple's withdrawal of the encrypted product from Britain.
